From statement minis to massive totes, the spring/summer 2023 season saw bags come in every shape, size and form—with some more unusual than others to say the least. The four fashion weeks saw designers either taking the word “bag” seriously or frivolously with a dash of humour.
As with the rhinestone fad and sleaziness of the noughties, accessories in metallic and crystal-embellished finishes ruled the roost at Diesel and Tom Ford. Alternatively, pointy spikes and studs reminiscent of punk and goth subcultures dominated the bags debuted by Acne Studios and Versace.
Particularly at the Milan Fashion Week shows, Italian heritage labels with young creative directors brought fresh takes on classic shapes and house codes. Maximilian Davis turned Ferragamo’s Gancini symbol into leitmotifs, while Matthieu Blazy introduced maxi handwoven leather totes at Bottega Veneta. Following the trend of oversized bags, Coach brought on massive satchels with a ’70s flair.
The post-pandemic mood for comfort and style was evident in the number of unstructured bags with slouchy silhouettes on the runways. Design houses such as Dior and Isabel Marant debuted crochet bags in neutral tones that boasted intricate handiwork. Plush and fluffy carry-ons were also seen on the arms of the models at Molly Goddard and Victoria Beckham–a popular texture for bags amongst showgoers on the streets as well.
The biggest surprise this season? Bags that treaded a fine line between objecthood and functionality. This season’s more playful collections–Louis Vuitton, Simone Rocha, Thom Browne–made winning cases for luggage tags, pearls, dachshunds and dollhouses as bags. Fendi baguettes aside, even fish and broccoli became hand-held accessories at JW Anderson and Collina Strada.
