The vision: Maria Grazia Chiuri is no stranger to the power of references. Looking to Italian-French Queen Catherine de Medici, the dichotomy between innocence and rebellion seemed to emanate from the smallest of details. Chiuri’s stage for the evening was crafted by French artist Eva Jospin, who erected a temple-like golden cave which housed dancers in flesh-coloured suits. And when it came to the clothes—it was an eternal reckoning of identity: from the lightness of lace to the defiance of leather.
Signature silhouettes: The revered cornerstones of Dior were still ever-present in Chiuri’s offerings, from genteel cinched waists to exaggerated skirts. As dancers performed to Dutch choreographers Imre and Marne van Opstal’s choreography, models appeared in delicate lace bralettes and skirts both demure and suitable for a night out (Looks 1 and 11); black, ruched dresses masterfully layered (Looks 20 and 24) and small but strategic lashings of denim that helped lead the eye. Chiuri’s rehashing of a signature Roger Vivier for Dior silhouette—the designer famously worked for the maison in 1953—saw platform boots and mary janes embellished with a signature, tilted heel.
What to shop from the collection: When it comes to Dior, it’s all about the dichotomy of making a striking statement in an understated way. The collection’s platform boots—which come in a flat, gladiator variation as well—are bound to win the hearts of the fashion set, whilst the black corsets paired atop billowing white blouses is a quintessential combination we know is here to stay.
