New York Fashion Week has hit the city at full speed. From the taxis cutting through downtown traffic to the crowds spilling out of show venues, the streets are already buzzing with editors, celebrities and a fashion crowd dressed for their own close-up. In between the rush from one show to the next, the sidewalks of SoHo and the Meatpacking District have become a runway of their own, and this season, the street set is making a particularly strong case for pattern.
This season’s New York Fashion Week runs from 10 to 15 September, and the schedule this spring/summer 2027 carries real weight. Henry Zankov made his debut as Diane von Furstenberg’s new artistic director on day one, marking a significant first chapter for a house whose wrap dress remains one of American fashion’s most enduring codes. Ralph Lauren brought its typically aspirational vision of American dressing, while Cult Gaia, Calvin Klein, Khaite and Tory Burch round out a calendar that feels particularly strong this season. Thom Browne closes the week on 15 September, with all the theatricality expected of a New York finale.
The front rows have already delivered their own moments. At Cult Gaia, Katie Holmes arrived in a shoulder-baring top and perfectly pleated wide-leg trousers, while Madelyn Cline went in the opposite direction in head-to-toe leather, pairing black briefs with a slouchy bomber and matching slingback stilettos. Anna Wintour made her entrance at Ralph Lauren, staying true to her signature in a navy-and-cream striped midi dress, while Viola Davis opted for a leather midi skirt, buttery brown boots and a sleeveless charcoal cable-knit. Elizabeth Debicki, meanwhile, made a case for tonal dressing in caramel, pairing an Oxford shirt and tie with a trench coat and pleated trousers.
Outside the venues, however, the real New York show is happening on the sidewalk. This season, the street set is leaning heavily into plaids, stripes and prints, with animal motifs proving particularly hard to miss. Leopard, zebra and other spotted patterns are turning up across coats, skirts, bags and separates, often layered together or thrown into otherwise classic looks. It is maximalism, but with a distinctly New York instinct for making even the loudest pieces feel wearable. Elsewhere, familiar city staples are being given new proportions. Tailoring is relaxed, oversized layers are paired with sharper accessories and classic pieces are styled with just enough unexpectedness to keep them from feeling too polished. Cynthia Erivo, for instance, moved through the city in all-black, pairing a military jacket with lengthy trousers and a Y2K beret—a look that that feels quintessentially New York.
For all the talk of what is next on the runway, New York’s sidewalks are already offering plenty of inspiration of their own. And in the Big Apple, that means mixing the expected with the unexpected: a little plaid, a little stripe, perhaps some leopard, and absolutely no fear of standing out.
