The spring/summer 2023 shows proved to be a bold showcase of shoes that are worth falling head over heels for. Daring boots, intricate laces and sculptural heels were a common theme throughout the Big Four fashion weeks—as demonstrated by Rick Owens and Givenchy. Vertiginous heels and pointed-toe silhouettes also left a lasting impression. This time around, several big names in fashion took an avant-garde route and made their footwear out of this world. Loewe and Dior introduced new shoes that sported unique shapes and textures such as ruffles, feathers and fringe.
As for the collections that brought fairytales to life—Thom Browne and Simone Rocha—multi-coloured ballet flats in shiny finishes were popular on the runway. Styling was also at play this season as models wore patterned stockings and socks with unique shoes, or in hybrid forms by way of sock boots. Case in point? Thom Browne presented platform brogues paired alongside polka-dot crew socks—an eccentric twist on the preppy aesthetic.
Interestingly, the cloyingly sweet spirit of Y2K and disco glamour of the ’80s continue to take the fashion world by storm into the new year. Chromatic finishes and crystal embellishments were all the rage as houses like Chanel, Tom Ford and Bottega Veneta rolled out shiny sling-backs, kitten heels and thigh-high boots. Alternatively, cowboy boots and gothic multi-strap Mary Janes were of note at Molly Goddard and Versace respectively. No amount of towering stompers, however, could compete with the number of sandals and open-toe cut-outs on the spring/summer 2023 runways over at Diesel, Dion Lee and Ferragamo.
With designers pulling out all the stops for footwear this season, it’s a sign that we should set our sights on putting our best foot forward as the new year approaches. Below, Vogue Singapore selects the most eye-catching shoes from the spring/summer 2023 runways that are on our radar.
