All sense of rationality can be expected to be thrown out the window at a Loewe show. At least, that’s what should be expected from the upcoming spring/summer 2023 presentation by Jonathan Anderson—especially when we recall his most recent shows for the house earlier this year. The art-conscious designer has a knack for weaving the surreal and otherworldly into his runway; unafraid of being a little playful, and perhaps even a little nonsensical.
We saw such themes unfold in his fall/winter 2022 show—where references were made to the surrealist Meret Oppenheim and balloons were blown up as parodies of body parts. Likewise, at his spring 2023 menswear moment, Anderson considers the industry’s dive into the metaverse with a set that appeared to be computer-generated, yet juxtaposed against a peculiar exploration of nature: where growing greens were sprouting from garments and shoes by way of a collaboration with Spanish bio-designer Paula Ulargui Escalona.
As for what can be expected from today’s show, a peek at the house’s Instagram account over the past few hours reveals swatches of materials, playful cereal motifs on a metal spoon and a creative ‘un-zipping’ of the Loewe set. In some sense, an almost child-like quality is hinted at, but if Anderson’s previous runway shows should serve as any reference at all, we can only begin to imagine what might be expected to be unveiled from behind the curtains. Some of the expected celebrity appearances include Zendaya, who just about a week ago, posted a possible runway look on her own account. As for other A-listers to look out for? We might look to Loewe’s recently announced global brand ambassadors: Chinese actress Tang Wei and South Korean group NMIXX.
