Anya Taylor-Joy has never been one to play it safe. Her current turn as a young Furiosa in George Miller’s Mad Max prequel alongside Chris Hemsworth therefore, a character played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, made sense, and felt extra fitting on the heels of her appearance in Dune: Part Two. There’s an otherworldly quality to Taylor-Joy that says “cast me in a futuristic desert film” quite convincingly.
The red carpet is something that Taylor-Joy approaches with equal moxie. Leopard-print berets, velvet Schiaparelli hoods and cobalt leather gloves—where other actresses are content in LBDs and naked dresses, you can trust Taylor-Joy to test her sartorial mettle, paying homage to her film in both subtle and overt ways. The international press tour for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, then, which kicked off yesterday evening in Sydney, called for vintage Paco Rabanne: a gilded mini dress and headpiece from the label’s spring/summer 1996 haute couture collection, studded all-over with Saint Sebastian arrows. It was a look fit for a warrior—more than apt for Furiosa herself.
A photocall earlier that day had seen Taylor-Joy reach for a one-shoulder, brown leather gown from Rick Owens spring/summer 2024—another label favoured by the sci-fi-fashion crowd. And it was the work of Ludovic de Saint Sernin that Taylor-Joy sought out for a cameo at CinemaCon in April, strips upon strips of black leather, laced up at the eyelets to form a halter neck mini. It was punk couture for the post-apocalypse.
Here, as Taylor-Joy puts her style pedal to the metal, we bring you all the looks she’s worn to promote Furiosa to date.
