Ahead of the “Big Four” fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris that are just around the corner, Tokyo Fashion Week returns with an idiosyncratic style of its own. The event, Japan’s biggest designer showcase, spotlights 49 homegrown brands that run the gamut, from mainstays to emerging talents. Aside from notable names like Keiichirosense, FETICO, and HOUGA presenting in-person runway shows, young labels are given a chance to shine. At the forefront is ablankpage, where Thai designer Larprojpaiboon Phoovadej creates gender-neutral garments that fuse Japanese clothes-making techniques with Thai culture.
But what makes Rakuten Fashion Week unique? The experimental street style. Outside the spring/summer 2023 presentations, showgoers made the city come alive in full living colour. With their bold sartorial eccentricities, ordinary street pavements become an exciting catwalk of their own. The vibrant dynamism of these fashion enthusiasts demonstrated a multitude of aesthetic influences that shape the wardrobes of Tokyo’s city dwellers. Think youth subcultures and Japanese avant-garde designers like Yohji Yamamoto. Kitsch ensembles demonstrated a technicolor spin on punk aesthetics and the traditional kimono; blazers were oversized and paired with wide-leg pants, whilst monochromatic outfits played with textures in the manner of Noir Kei Ninomiya. For anyone adventurous with a penchant for the flamboyant, Tokyo’s street style is one to put on your radar.
