As one of the newer kids on the block, the Copenhagen Fashion Week weaves a wholly different mood to call its own. The Nordic capital’s sartorial frontier can be described as cacophonous—defined by the multitude of cultures that lean into the fabric of its people; from one grounded in the pragmatism of their outdoor-led lifestyle to the near-magical quality of their traditional costumes and fantastical folklore. In recent years, their adoption of the Sustainability Action Plan 2020-2022 places them as one of the leading industry-wide forces advocating for sustainability and conscious practices, translating into the brands who show on the runway as well.
Apart from the slew of mainstay Scandinavian brands such as Ganni and Saks Potts, the biannual fashion show made sure to still make way for thoughtful, emerging names. At the top of the list is upcycling house (di)vision, where a sense of bohemian maximalism is imbued into pieces of workwear utility—honed to perfection via an overarching sense of asymmetry found within bold, contrasting shades and graphic gridlock patterns. Christopher Raeburn’s eponymous label that’s made responsible design his needle for over a decade aimed for approaching design through functional materiality; as jackets, protective vests and parachute dresses made out of parachute fabric were sent down the runway.
But what of the fashion on the streets? Showgoers demonstrated a youthful sense of dynamism that seemed to fit right into the ever-changing mould of Nordic fashion. High-chromatic ensembles ruled the roost: where vivid hues were splashed all over textured textiles and clashing patterns were meshed seamlessly together. Despite the seeming playfulness, the streetwear still maintained a delicate balance with practicality; tops were skin-baring and summer-ready, whilst preppy, tailored looks consisted of vests matched with trousers and sporty sunglasses.
