The first Monday in May is here, and with it the Met Gala 2026. This year’s Costume Institute Gala is themed “Costume Art”, with a dress code of Fashion Is Art set for the event. Held annually, fashion’s biggest and most important event of the year is sponsored by Vogue to raise funds for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York.
“Costume Art” is this year’s blockbuster Spring exhibition at The Met, and will inaugurate a new suite of galleries at the museum. The exhibition explores depictions of bodies in dress, pairing garments from fashion history with artworks that elucidate the inseparable relationship between our bodies and how we have, since time immemorial, chosen to dress it.
At the gala this year, the Fashion Is Art dress code has been largely interpreted as a way of diving deep into art history, with looks that reference and pay homage to famous artworks. More than one insouciantly off-shoulder gown nodded to John Singer Sargent’s ‘Portrait of Madame X’; and Madonna, who had perhaps the most theatrical appearance of the night, turned up in witchy Saint Laurent finished with a ship headpiece and a coven of seven attendants to hold her organza cape—a reference to a work by Surrealist painter Leonora Carrington.
But the dress code being broad as it is also offered many celebrities attending the gala a mode of simply dressing beautifully and taking that artifice as its own kind of art. On the jewellery front, that was most exciting in the looks that styled and played with jewels in exciting ways: strings of diamonds worn thrillingly on Vittoria Ceretti’s bare back, Lily-Rose Depp wearing a connoisseur’s-fave Chanel feather brooch in her hair, and Daisy Edgar-Jones wearing Boucheron earrings that curve so elegantly inwards it almost melds with her hairdo.
There are trends to spot, too. Beautiful statement earrings have been taking centre stage this year, and on the Met Gala red carpet stars like Karina of Aespa affirmed it. Karina, in full Prada, finished her look with amethyst and peridot earrings from the Italian brand’s new Couleur Vivante fine jewellery line. Model of the moment Awar Odhiang, meanwhile, was dressed in Chanel, topping off her look with a playful pair of earrings with birds on perch swings from the maison’s recent spring/summer haute couture show.
