The biggest night in fashion is upon us once more. The Met Gala, which takes place yearly on the first Monday of May, brings together the most influential names of the moment. Each year, guests at the event are handpicked by a board of chairpeople, typically helmed by Anna Wintour. Joining her this year as co-chairs are Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams.
This year’s theme for the exhibition is ‘Costume Art’, with the accompanying dress code for invited guests being ‘Fashion Is Art’—one that feels at once abstract and provocative. At the Met Gala, where fashion reigns supreme, the dress code invites guests and designers to interpret how the lines between art and fashion converge and intertwine. Is fashion art? Is art fashion? Or are the two separate entities altogether?
No matter your take, one thing’s for certain: the dress code leaves fair room for creative personalisation and flair.
On the red carpet is where our favourite stars shine. Asian celebrities, in particular, have been taking the fashion game a step further with their bold looks in recent years. Take, for instance, Jennie, who attended the 2025 Met Gala—under the theme of ‘Tailored For You’—in a custom Chanel look that took over 330 hours to create. Last year’s edition also saw the appearance of a slew of other major Asian faces, including Seventeen’s S.Coups in Hugo Boss, Priyanka Chopra in Balmain, Freen Sarocha in Valentino and Rosé in Saint Laurent.
The power of the K-pop’s It girls carried into this year’s Met Gala too. All four members of Blackpink turned up to the red carpet, with Jisoo, at last, making her debut at the event. The Dior ambassador opted for an embroidered pink gown, paired with vintage Cartier jewels. Jennie kept her silhouette simple, donning a chromatic gown by Matthieu Blazy at Chanel. Meanwhile, Rosé leaned into the subtle art of storytelling, with her black gown from Saint Laurent, finished with a bird motif inspired by The Birds, a painting by Georges Braque, and brought to life by Tiffany & Co. And as a host for the evening, Lisa took her flair for the dramatic to the next level, entering a custom white Robert Wun ensemble, complete with avant-garde 3D arms and intricate beading.
The Met Gala this year was also graced by other key figures from Asian entertainment. Kpop Demon Hunters’s Audrey Nuna wore Robert Wun, whilst EJAE made her luminous appearance in Swarovski. Not quite golden, but a silver gown of crystals that also paid homage to her Korean heritage. Actor Ahn Hyo-seop made his debut in a custom Valentino suit, sporting a skinny scarf. Alysa Liu, fresh off her appointment as a house ambassador, wore a voluminous, ruffled Louis Vuitton number. And as for the ever-daring Tyla? Out came a daring look from Valentino, sumptuously matched to her gleaming, golden skin.
