And here it is, the Met Gala—or Manhattan’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit—of 2025. The theme of the Met’s key fashion exhibition this year is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, delving into the rich culture, history and look of black dandyism and style over the years. The theme for the Met Gala fittingly follows this thread of tailoring and a bold embrace of dandy style.
On the jewellery and watches front (which is always a treat at a fancy fashion bonanza like the Met Gala where guests take more style risks), a couple of trends have emerged. The first, and most important, is an embrace of personality tied to the unique ways that black dandies express their individual style. Differentiation, if you will, as a point of strength.
See, for instance, Ayo Edebiri choosing an adorable Cartier brooch that echoes her vivacious energy; or the Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh wearing a princely Mughal-design necklace inspired by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. Doja Cat also brought her signature left field interpretation of the Met themes, going deliciously retro—pinstripes! boulder shoulders! cone bra! feline prints!—with the jewels to match.
Diamonds also made a strong showing at the Met Gala red carpet this year. One way it’s been smartly worn is as accents of twinkling clarity to cut through complicated outfits. Take the writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose diamonds gave elegant levity to her red feather and bow gown by Prabal Gurung.
One other emergent diamond trend to really keep an eye on: yellow diamonds on the ears. There were several yellow diamond ear studs this year. A subtle touch on Zendaya’s all-white suit, and on the ears of Louis Vuitton creative director and Tiffany & Co. designer Pharrell Williams—both style stars who certainly know their jewellery.
But with a dress code so closely centred on tailoring, it was no surprise that the trend of brooches on suits hit full stride. Formerly a way for men to dress up their suits on the red carpet, this fun and easy-to-adopt touch of jewellery styling has now made its way onto celebrities of all genders—vive la broche!
