Over in the Big Apple, we’ve officially checked into the Met Gala. Year on year, the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art come to life on the first Monday of May. Like clockwork, a scintillating fleet of stars step out in their best-dressed garb for fashion’s biggest night—and 2025 was no different. This year, the dress code ‘Tailored for You’ came hand in hand with the Costume Institute’s latest spring exhibition, which was titled ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’. A necessary homage to the importance of clothing and its impact on Black identities; as well as a shift in focus to menswear’s finest moments.
In the days approaching the Met, several stars paid tribute to some of these very icons. Just over the weekend, new scene favourite Doechii was seen leaving her hotel whilst reminiscing a fun Louis Vuitton look from the archives: that of the inimitable style figure André Leon Talley. Paloma Elsesser also similarly wore a custom leather jacket that featured a painted portrait of Talley. Just the night before the Met, Tyla demonstrated she really understood the assignment: opting to deck herself out in a freshly-debuted fall/winter 2025 look from British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker.
Their looks on the carpet later leaned into different interpretations of the theme, from Tyla’s ‘20s inspired Jacquemus number to Doechii who ran her victory lap on the carpet in a short suit designed by Pharrell Williams for Louis Vuitton—cigar in one hand. As expected, many others—like Jennie, Zendaya, Imaan Hammam, Rosé, Tracee Ellis Ross and Madonna—all came in sumptuous variations of the suit. But considering the theme, there’s no question that expectations ran high for some other folk this year: the men.
It’s clear that many of these gentlemen came knowing they would be amongst the best dressed stars of the night. One look at the evening’s attendees and you’d know. C0-chair Colman Domingo’s double duty moment in Valentino: a luscious velvet blue cape (in tribute to the late Talley) revealed to be a turning point for some dapper suiting. Elsewhere, Kaytranada made his electrifying debut with a homage to legendary jazz musician Miles Davis, in custom McQueen no less. And as suave as he’ll ever be, modern day dandy and co-chair A$AP Rocky turned up rocking a custom design from his own creative agency AWGE, centred around a technical Marmot outerwear jacket, which Rocky describes as a native Harlem tradition.
