Gold never loses its shine. Both literally, as a precious metal with remarkable corrosion resistance, and stylistically, as a source of beauty that has fascinated us for millennia. The Roman jeweller Bvlgari understands this particularly well. Since it was established in Rome (coincidentally, nicknamed the Eternal City) in 1884, the house has wrapped its sumptuous creations in gold and given it the warm, candescent glow of eternity.
This year, Bvlgari is giving weight to its belief in the everlasting allure of gold. Bvlgari Eternal is a new collection that trawls the house’s rich archives to reissue heritage designs. It happens through a careful curatorial process—an abundance of choice calls for high selectivity—with significant pieces chosen that reflect key aspects of the house’s identity. These “hidden gems from our history”, say CEO Jean-Christophe Babin, will “honour the timeless spirit of Bvlgari while projecting it forward with a contemporary vision”.

The first chapter of the Bvlgari Eternal collection is the Vimini, which takes as inspiration a 1942 gold bracelet. Its name, Italian for ‘wicker’, speaks to its flexible, woven architecture. The original was conceived during wartime, when white metals like platinum were being requisitioned for national and military use. It cast the focus, for jewellers, back to the warmth of yellow and rose gold. For Bvlgari, the sunny colour of yellow gold evokes the genial spirit of its Mediterranean identity.

“I was fascinated by its rhythmic geometry and warm tones of gold, which we re-interpreted with a modern sensibility,” said creative director Lucia Silvestri of the Vimini’s modern incarnations: a line of necklace, bracelet, ring and two earring styles in yellow gold, as well as gem-set high jewellery versions. The bracelet is the most overtly referential, with a golden wave silhouette that wraps the wrist with surprising suppleness. “Each piece feels fluid and tactile, designed to move naturally with the body,” Silvestri explained, emphasising that while each modern jewel is contemporary and elegant, they are nonetheless—as the ‘eternal’ name aptly proves— “deeply connected to our heritage”.
