Van Cleef & Arpels reimagines its iconic Alhambra collection with a touch of luminous pink enamel

In 1968, Van Cleef & Arpels introduced its first Alhambra jewel, a four-leaf clover design that symbolised luck. Over the years, the motif has blossomed through new colours, precious materials and meticulous craftsmanship to become one of the maison’s most cherished collections. This year, the Parisian jeweller continues to evolve its design language with radiant pink enamel that shines like a vibrant kind of love. Like a heart that’s been nurtured by a lover, the pink enamel grace five new creations: a Vintage Alhambra pendant, five-motif bracelet, 10- and 20-motif necklace, and a pair of Magic Alhambra two-motif earrings with guilloché yellow gold.

Each design is rendered in pink enamel, using a technique inspired by 17th-century ‘gold-ruby’ glassmaking. Instead of using colour pigments, tiny particles of gold are instead fused into enamel to create this particular shade of pink.

This savoir-faire calls for fine gold particles in just the right size, shape and concentration—a precision that took Van Cleef & Arpels’ enamel workshops several years to develop. A devotion that has been nurtured over years, where workshops have perfected more than fifteen enamelling techniques.

When the pink enamel is crafted, the maison polishes each four-leaf motif to create a curved surface that intensifies its shine and shimmer. Fine, tiny bubbles adorn the translucent enamel—evidence of each one’s hand-crafted nature. Like a warm and loving embrace, these enamel motifs are held securely in place by the gold Alhambra frame with two rows of beads.

The beauty continues past the enamelling, threading its way through the very chain that connects each clover motif together. The Alhambra collection’s designs are sealed with a subtle clasp, shaped with the maison’s lozenge hallmark and etched with its monogram, like a promise well kept.
