Gird your loins, fashion darlings. The 2026 Met Gala red carpet is officially underway! This year’s exhibit, “Costume Art,” examines the longstanding affair between fashion and art, exploring the “centrality of the dressed body” by pairing garments with paintings, sculptures, and objects spanning 5,000 years of art. On view from 10 May 2026 to 10 January 2027, the exhibition will take over the new Condé M. Nast Galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art—a nearly 12,000-square-foot space now the primary home for the Costume Institute.
In tandem with the theme, the evening’s dress code, “Fashion is Art,” asks attendees to consider the many ways that designers use the body as their blank canvas. Given the exhibition’s focus on the relationship between the human form and clothing, many of tonight’s looks will likely engage with form—whether through sculptural silhouettes, or more dramatic, anatomical interpretations. Others may take cues from art history more broadly, referencing famous paintings and transformative art movements.
As for who has already been seen walking the prestigious Met steps tonight? Amongst the first few to arrive was co-chair Nicole Kidman, who took a crimson Chanel number out for a spin, whilst her daughter, Sunday Rose, was a sweetheart in Dior. Of course, Beyoncé—who finally made her return to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the first time in a decade—came in looking like a queen settled in her own skin, wearing an encrusted gown designed by Olivier Rousteing. In accordance with the theme, a handful of folks knew to tap onto Robert Wun’s theatrical designs, from Naomi Osaka’s striking ensemble to Lisa‘s 3D-printed arms. More artful outings include Chase Infiniti’s colourful entry from McQueen, Janelle Monae who combined cables and moss in a Christian Siriano look, and Emma Chamberlain’s watercolour Mugler gown that cast her body as canvas.
