Hollywood’s biggest night returned for its 95th season and this year’s show delivered some of the most memorable Oscars jewellery looks in history. Pulling out all the stops to work with the world’s best designers and jewellers, our favourite celebrities have curated head-turning red carpet looks that are more than the sum of its parts.
Deepika Padukone, for one, elevated her Louis Vuitton gown with the evening’s most stunning jewellery piece: a Cartier high jewellery necklace featuring diamonds, yellow diamonds, and one 67.18-carat pear-shaped briolette-cut yellow sapphire centre stone. Likewise, Angela Bassett looked absolutely amazing in Moschino, accentuated by Bulgari Serpenti high jewellery.
Also especially memorable was the Tiffany & Co. necklace that Florence Pugh wore with her jaw-dropping outfit by Valentino. From the American jeweller’s 2022 Botanica collection, its undulating curves diamonds and white gold perfectly captured the actress’ youthful and dynamic personality.
Indeed, while glorious high jewellery necklaces are usually the highlight when it comes to red carpet glamour, young celebrities and stylists these days are showing a preference for other kinds of jewellery pieces over necklaces—especially necklaces that are rather too ostentatious, which has a tendency to add a few years to the look.
Leaving the neckline bare, on the other hand, results in a fresher, lighter overall look, unencumbered by a heavy diamond festooned necklace. Celebrities like Stephanie Hsu and Ana de Armas, for instance, embodied new age red carpet glamour by eschewing big necklaces in favour of high jewellery earrings and bracelets.
That, along with the profusion of halter, high, round, and other fanciful necklines this year, meant that necklaces have taken a backseat for once, relinquishing the spotlight to statement bracelets, rings, and earrings.
Another key Oscars jewellery trend this year came from the men. While male celebrities wearing brooches on their jacket lapels is not big fashion news anymore, some have upped their jewellery game by wearing not one but two brooches as a stylistic or personal statement. Presenter Michael B Jordan and Best Supporting Actor winner Ke Huy Quan were the celebrities who embraced this trend.
