The 95th Academy Awards is finally here—poised like a grand finale to the standard slate of awards shows scheduled for this time of the year. From the Golden Globes to the Grammys and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, there had been a throng of excitable moments to file into the memory books for 2023, including Rihanna’s surprise appearance at the former and Zendaya’s triumphant return to the red carpet at the latter. And with the 2023 Oscars still in tow, it seems like only more scene-stealing moments are to be expected.
When it came to a question of the awards show itself, anticipation was high as the various categories saw close contenders fill up the nominee lists. All eyes were kept peeled on the Best Actress category, where Michelle Yeoh has officially made history as the only Asian to have won the ‘Best Actress’ category at the awards show. Whilst Rihanna’s rousing performance of “Lift Me Up”—the emotional soundtrack to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—was a touching tribute to the legendary late actor Chadwick Boseman. But sans the awards and highly-awaited performances, there’s no denying that the awards show holds an entire trove of glamorous appeal elsewhere: its red carpet.
Year on year, a number of stars descend onto one of the hottest red carpets of the season, with equally formidable frocks to beat. There were serious fashion moments to recall from 2022’s alone; think Zoë Kravitz sweet pink couture from Saint Laurent, Timothee Chalamet’s choice to go sans-shirt under his cropped blazer and Zendaya’s Valentino two-piece that swept her right into cool girl station. 2023 seems to have brought with it a charm of its own, as a flurry of stars hit the carpet in delicious couture. Rihanna herself made her appearance in a custom bandeau Alaïa dress—once again proving her might in maternity dressing. On the flipside, Florence Pugh slipped into yet another number from Valentino whilst Fan BingBing sparkled in a sweeping Tony Ward look that channeled Old Hollywood glamour.
