New York Fashion Week is back. Several heavy-hitters have already showed their collections, and it was nothing short of a robust start. For fall/winter 2023, it seems animal prints are back in style, with maximalist displays of recognisable fauna seen across several shows. Prabal Gurung presented a metamorphosis of sorts, with abstract butterly patterns blazoned across lightweight fabrics that provided unique structured silhouettes.
Dion Lee chose to focus on snake-skin patterns—plastering them on thigh-high boots and wrap dresses—amidst heavy distressing and daring cut-outs. Proenza Schouler’s approach was subtler, choosing to pay homage to the strength of womanhood and its associated femininity. Referencing their long-time friends and colleagues as muses for this collection, muted colours and a lack of prints stood out. House signatures such as midi-length skirts and velvet dresses made a return, albeit in updated cuts with an emphasis on quality and construction.
Off the runway, it seems The Big Apple is living up to its name. Showgoers did not disappoint, with many dressed up in vibrant ensembles. Eye-popping outerwear in colours of neon green and fuchsia were aplenty, with a mix-and-match of contrasting fabrics seemingly popular as well. Several old trends were still prevalent, from Gorpcore to double denim. The Mischf Astroy Boy boots in poppy red graced the feet of several attendees, too. As always, there were several sightings of muted tailoring in monochromatic sets, accompanied with elegant coats and eyewear.
With mainstays such as Michael Kors and Thom Browne yet to show, there is much more to look forward to. Below, street photographer Phil Oh captures some of the strongest street style looks from New York Fashion Week fall/winter 2023.
