If Paris couture pays ode to the grandiose of the past, Copenhagen hosts for the future. For the first time ever since the introduction of its sustainability action plan back in 2020, the internal committee for Copenhagen Fashion Week has finally implemented the full range of its requirements—ranging from smart material choices to ethical working conditions.
Home to a bevy of fashion favourites for the Scandinavian crowd such as Ganni and Saks Potts, this week sees the runway taken over by the fall/winter 2023 collections of 28 different brands. So far, environmental heavyweights like (di)vision and Aeron have shown their hands for the season; the former putting forth a theatrical spin to the concept of wastage—where the after-scene of a banquet set the stage for its upcycled garments. Whilst the latter keeps its focus on utility, albeit with an elevated twist.
Out on the streets, the Nordic spirit of marrying functionality with exuberant play is stronger than ever. Where showgoers and the fashion-forward have their sights set on practical footwear and oversized coats, all optimised for the wintry cold. Ensembles of deconstructed denim dance in unison with a variety of knits, before meeting sleek sunglasses and structured bags. But the overarching palette? Warm, vibrant hues, should muted browns and blacks not hit the mark for them.
