The MTV Video Music Awards, aka the MTV VMAs, is one of the music industry’s most iconic ceremonies. Over the years, it has gifted us with memorable performances galore. Remember Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” performance in a bustier wedding gown in 1984? And Britney Spears performing “I’m a Slave 4 U” with a snake in 2001? Besides jaw-dropping on-stage moments, the red carpet has also blessed us with plenty of legendary fashion moments. The MTV VMAs 2021 was no different.
Back for its 38th edition this year, the event was hosted by rapper Doja Cat, who rocked the red carpet in Vivienne Westwood. Other best-dressed celebrities of the night included Lil Nas X in an off-the-shoulder lilac number by Versace and country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves in Valentino haute couture. Besides established luxury brands, there was also a spotlight on emerging designers. Charli XCX opted for a custom lace dress by Taiwanese designer Shawna Wu, and Normani wore a white set by London label Patrycja Pagas.
Among the award winners were the likes of teen sensation Olivia Rodrigo, who nabbed Song of the Year for “Drivers License”, Best New Artist, and Push Performance of the Year. Justin Bieber won Artist of the Year and Best Pop for “Peaches”. Met Gala 2021 co-chair Billie Eilish won Best Latin for her collaboration with Rosalia on “Lo Vas A Olvidar” and Video for Good for “Your Power”. And while multi-award winning group BTS were unable to attend the event in Brooklyn in person, they accepted their awards for Group of the Year and Best K-Pop with “Butter” virtually.
