No one provides you with a blueprint for navigating health. Add in the intricacies of womanhood, and this becomes even more complicated. With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affecting roughly 8 to 13 per cent of reproductive-aged women worldwide, as per the World Health Organisation’s statistics, the condition remains one of the most prevalent causes of anovulation and infertility.
While the physical effects of PCOS on weight, skin, and fertility are often discussed, many multifaceted aspects, from mental health and body image to self-esteem and wellbeing, are often overlooked. In this episode of Vogue Uncut, Thomson Fertility Centre’s fertility specialist Dr. Janice Tung and Sahur Saleim, CEO and founder of Sahur’s Art—who was diagnosed with PCOS in her early twenties—deep dive into the complexities of the condition.
“I often like to put it in a different perspective to patients. Genetically, something has gone wrong with your metabolism. It’s not something within your control and there are all these issues that come with it, from mild to severe,” shares Dr. Janice. As for the effects it has on how you feel about yourself? “You realise how many of the things that women want to fix, the things that women want beauty solutions for, are just manifestations of PCOS,” adds Sahur. “It’s like these things that are considered ‘unattractive,’ people are using to market beauty products and treatments to you.”
Whether you’re newly diagnosed or a seasoned warrior, we hope that this episode serves as a catalyst to better understanding the rudimentary aspects of the condition, from mind to body.
