Shye, born Shye-Anne Brown, is one of the young hopefuls of Singapore’s music scene. A self-taught singer-songwriter and producer, the 22-year-old has already amassed a loving fanbase back home, having released several EPs and a studio album, along with opening for world-class acts like Daniel Caesar and Clairo at their Singapore pitstops. Since participating in survival shows like China’s Youth π Plan and Chuang Asia Thailand, she now has her sights set on the rest of the world. It’s still early in the year, but the rising musician’s burgeoning career has already brought her to festivals and events in Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei. Earlier this week, she made the voyage to Paris, the fashion capital of the world, for her maiden Chanel show at the Grand Palais for the fall/winter 2025 season.
“Being able to experience the show in person in such an iconic venue feels so magical, it’s nothing like watching it on the screen. I’m so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to witness this moment in such a beautiful city, surrounded by artistry, history, and the roots of Chanel of course,” Shye tells Vogue Singapore. Given that it’s not her first time in the City of Light—some of her favourite things to do in town include people-watching at cafés and hitting up its iconic museums—but this trip is one she finds especially meaningful, and in her words, surreal.
While she’s made music her domain, Shye’s love for fashion is palpable in her edgy, distinctive sense of style. “Fashion and music are both forms of self-expression, they empower and connect people. And as a music producer, I see these art forms as deeply intertwined. Just as fashion plays with textures, colours, and shapes to create a visual identity, music layers different soundscapes, tones and rhythms to build a sonic atmosphere. The way a fabric drapes or the way colours contrast can in the same way, inspire the way I structure a track. Whether it’s blending soft and subtle pads with sharp percussion or contrasting warm analogue synths,” she muses, likening the storytelling process of fashion to her own as a musician. “My approach to music creation is in some ways similar to curating a look in the sense that every element has to complement the others. To create something cohesive yet bold, that comes together to tell a story in a song.”
