Lily Collins is bidding a temporary adieu to France to live in Lena Dunham’s Pollyville. The Girls creator is officially confirmed to write and direct the Emily in Paris star in a live-action film inspired by the classic ’90s toy Polly Pocket, which will centre around a “young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship”. “Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me,” Dunham shared of the project. “Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM.”
Collins—who is currently shooting on location for her Netflix hit—also chimed in on the nostalgia-inducing announcement, sharing a childhood photograph of herself on Instagram. “Little Lil, big news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pockets, it’s a real dream come true to announce this project! I am partnering with the most inspiring powerhouse team… to reintroduce Polly to the world in a fun, modern way… bringing these tiny toys to the big screen. Truly so excited to be coming on as both a producer and Polly herself! Can’t wait to dive into this pastel world…”
Polly is actually the second Mattel toy to inspire a major Hollywood blockbuster this year. After much back and forth regarding the director and lead, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have officially signed on to direct Margot Robbie in Barbie, with Robbie playing the titular doll. As for the plot? So far, Sony has only shared that it will follow a “doll living in ‘Barbieland’” who is “expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world”. Come on, Barbie, let’s go party?
