Drawing inspiration from the heavens, Fendi’s extensive archives and above all, the romance of high summer, the Fendi Astrology capsule collection features a dreamy mix of swim, beachwear and accessories. As is de rigeur for the accomplished house, the bags are a highlight. Striped and woven pochettes pay homage to the Mediterranean beachfront, instantly recalling a salty seabreeze and languorous afternoons on the sand, animating iconic styles.

The signature Peekaboo, especially, gets several makeovers. Since its release in 2009, the trapezoidal bag has become a token of class and luxury, with a cachet that is constantly renewed by updated designs from the brand. This summer, the house has unveiled the surprise of a raffia Peekaboo, the new fabrication adding tactility and friendliness to the familiar silhouette. Another Peekaboo spurns the typical calfskin body for canvas, adorned with meticulously embroidered threads and sequins. Strikingly, it is printed with Karl Lagerfeld’s original zodiac illustrations: Libra’s scales, Scorpio’s scorpion, Aries’ ram and Taurus’ bull are all depicted in cherry pastels, finished with Selleria stitching.

Elsewhere, in keeping with the sun soaked vibe of the collection, straw, canvas and denim become foundational materials. Straw is woven into the bodies of bags, braided into Peekaboo bags, or used for a fringe effect across the Fendi First. A trick-of-the-eye embroidery technique using glass beads and sequins gives the appearance of straw tufting to a striking Baguette and Peekaboo Mini. And if one fancies a bigger bag, the new beach-friendly shopper in raffia makes for a great option.

Of course, the house’s signature craftsmanship is not lacking. Debuting in a medium and mini size, the ‘cuoio’ leather version of the Fendi Step Out is padded and stitched to form the Fendi logo in exquisite maroquinerie workmanship, available with a jacquard inner lining. With all these beautiful bags, Fendi’s injunction is clear: have an opulent summer.
