To some extent, everybody can relate to the new Cruella de Vil of Disney’s new live-action remake, Cruella. She’s a classic Disney villain. But that’s because she just saw the world differently than others. And she refuses to bend. Watch the trailer here.
She knows she’s not for everybody. Her choices led her on a path forged out of her own sheer wit. Yes, she dognapped some adorable puppies and adores fur but that comes much later. Which brings us to the outfits—oh the outfits. Let us just say, Emma Stone is perfectly cast as the titular character who finds herself evolve from aspiring fashion designer to fierce and fabulous albeit slightly unhinged prima donna.

In this prequel to the 101 Dalmations movies, we get to follow her journey of self-discovery set in 70’s London where the punk-rock movement was in full swing.
Style of an Era
Rebelling against the peace-love-joy ideals of the 60’s, punk rock is rooted in counter-culture. It does so by ripping up all the rules of good behaviour. This is reflected in the music as well as the fashion codes of the time. Punk rock is angry, it’s loud, it’s provocative. It’s distressed, it’s messy and, guess what, it doesn’t care.
Skin tight leather, sharp metal studs, torn up t-shirts, smudgy eyes… Everything inappropriate defined the style of this era, as embraced by rock-n-roll designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, also known as the Mother of Punk.

Then there’s the irascible Jean-Paul Gaultier who ushered this subculture into the catwalk, turning it into couture. And Anna Sui’s intentional mix of punk rock with baroque romanticism and a little bit of goth.
White, Black and Red
But you don’t always have to go full-on with punk rock fashion. Take a leaf from Stone’s red carpet ensemble at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere. Dressed in Louis Vuitton from top to toe, she stayed close to the Cruella theme with a tailored black suit and a white blouse with a pussybow necktie.

Adding hints of fiery red in her lipstick and clutch, Stone nailed her accessories game with LV Volt earrings and a fabulous Louis Vuitton sword brooch known as the Les Armoiries brooch. It is made of a mix of white, yellow, and pink gold, paved with yellow and white diamonds. The highlight? One pear-shaped yellow diamond on the hilt.
This piece took 80 hours to craft and it channelled just the right amount of Cruella for Stone who welcomed her first child—a baby girl—in March this year.
