Sunday night welcomed the 21st annual Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards with the theme, “Year of the Black Woman.” The BET Awards 2021 show was hosted by Empire and Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, held in front of a live audience for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Celebrating Black women isn’t a fad or a trend, it’s a forever mood,” declared Henson, while opening the BET Awards 2021 show. “There is more than enough room for all of us to thrive, because can’t nobody be like me and can’t nobody be you like you.”
The night saw a well-deserved list of nominees and awardees taking the stage. H.E.R nabbed the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist award, while Megan Thee Stallion topped the Best Female Hip Hop Artist category. Clad in matching wide-collared suits, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak—aka Silk Sonic—won Best Group, and performed their single ‘Leave the Door Open’. And, for her trailblazing success in the industry, Queen Latifah was presented with the Lifetime Achievement BET Award.
Beyond the awards, the spotlight also shone on the beautiful outfits of the night. Emmy-award winning actress Zendaya stunned in a purple Versace confection, supermodel and new mum Naomi Campbell glowed in a gold gown, and actress Issa Rae kept things short and sweet in a sophisticated white blazer dress.
