In New York, the usual scene of grey concrete and skyscrapers has been overturned. As we jump head first into the New York Fashion Week fall/winter 2024 calendar, the fashion-forward set have been flocking to the streets outside the shows like moths to a flame. Helmut Lang kicked things off, as Peter Do presented his sophomore collection for the brand. Where the inimitable designer’s archives were referenced liberally, from cheeky ‘Chinatown bag’ prints and electric orange knits to the famous bubble wrap jacket, only this time Do remade it in silk.
Elsewhere at Eckhaus Latta, there was a move towards an idea of minimalism, delivered in a sensuality that was unmistakable: in knits that clung to the body, acid wash garments and slashes that would show just the right amount of skin. But if that irresistible taste of New York-cool was what anyone desired, then perhaps Tommy Hilfiger was the place to be on the first evening of NYFW. Seen on the runway were signatures of the house—think crewnecks, varsity jackets and polo shirts—given a preppy, essential update that fell right in line with the chic, modern feel of its star-studded front row. If anyone’s asking, rumours had it that Lily van der Woodsen was spotted in attendance.
Out on the streets, the sartorial-inclined responded in kind to the sun’s welcome appearance—breaking the endlessly cold streak of winter. For many, heavy coats and furs were shed and replaced by lightweight trenches and tailored blazers. Alternative layers maintained a playful edge, delivered in shreds of texture and vivid pops of colour. Whilst pinstripes, plaids and the occasional bow have proven to still have its hold on the fashion set.
