It’s official, Paris haute couture week has descended upon us. The sartorial crowd has shifted its focus onto the next calendar event of the season as leading French couturiers showcase their latest creations in resplendent glamour, showcasing intricate detail and technique through the lens of their respective vision.
Commencing the season was none other than avant-garde luminary Schiaparelli, with Daniel Roseberry introducing the audience to a surrealist sci-fi universe with the maison’s collection. Maggie Maurer opened the show in a white singlet and couture cargo-style pants, accompanied with a bedazzled crystal left ear. Not to forget the robot baby nestled at her hip, constructed with tech elements of the past–think defunct electronic motherboards, CDs, flip phones and the like. Meanwhile, Chanel had romance, femininity and poise written all over its collection as creative director Virginie Viard referenced the house’s storied history with ballet. Pastel tweed sets, chiffon sleeves and tulle creations were spotted down the runway, centred around a colossal installation of a Chanel button, which was also the main star in the season’s teaser film starring Margaret Qualley. Aptly titled ‘The Button’, creative direction was in the hands of Dave Free with the unreleased soundtrack scored by Kendrick Lamar.
The pair was also seated front row of the show alongside Naomi Campbell, as haute couture week saw a full celebrity guest list in attendance. The likes of Zendaya, Hunter Schafer and Jennifer Lopez arrived front and centre at Schiaparelli, while pop mogul Rihanna made her haute couture comeback, as the Dior ambassador took her front row seat in a black brocade puffer, an ode to Monsieur Dior’s Bar jacket. Also spotted amongst the celebrity crowd were Han So Hee, Natalie Portman and Anya Taylor Joy.
Off the runway, a fashion-forward set took the streets by storm. It seems black is the new black, as stars and attendees alike arrived in inky tones and layers. Velvet panels, padded puffers and leather jackets added depth and texture in favour of the monochrome palette, while gold accessories made for a sophisticated finishing touch.
