As the final leg of fashion month came to an end in Paris earlier this week, it was clear to all that the spring/summer 2024 season was an exceedingly strong outing for accessories. Supersized utility belts, retro-inspired shades and sparkling statement jewellery pervaded the runway, impeccably accentuating each look.
Just like past seasons, bags came in every shape, size and form as well as in a myriad of colours and textures. Maximalism seemed to be hot again, with many brands showing pieces that were decorated with all kinds of assorted trinkets. Powerhouses such as Balenciaga and Miu Miu showed luxuriously capacious day bags embellished with key chains and ribbons. Other brands like Moschino followed suit, with its distinguished heart bag reimagined in soothing lavender and adorned with dangling keys.
As always, there were an abundance of top handle work bags. Ferragamo and Dior showed opulent calfskin iterations finished with gold hardware, while Prada’s grained leather rendition saw silver studs and a belt further drive home a sense of rugged utility. In a similar vein, Diesel and Acne Studios presented bags that had undergone various treatments to achieve a cracked and distressed exterior, further driving home their rave and post-apocalyptic themes.
For those who prefer more compact carriers, there were plenty this season to shout about. Opt for Versace’s transparent case that boasts the house’s signature Medusa emblem, or Chanel’s angular number that comes with a pearl strap for a classier ensemble. Valentino’s bright pink minibag that can be slung around the wrist offers a vibrant pop of colour and Coperni’s iconic moon bag is now reimagined as a CD player, setting the stage for social media virility among Gen Z fans.
