No better place than the City of Light to experience true joie de vivre amidst fashion’s ultimate season. As we moved from New York into London and then Milan, the spring/summer 2024 scene has only increasingly proven to be an absolute knockout for the sartorial crowd. Of course, it was only a fact that was swiftly reinforced in Paris after. What more could be said—when it was where Sarah Burton sang her swan song and took her final bow after 26 years at Alexander McQueen with a bestial collection that perfectly encapsulated the monstrous feminine.
Elsewhere, there were plenty more runway moments that were breathtaking in their own right. Take Undercover’s closing out segment for one; when the lights dimmed, a series of strapless dresses were paraded out—each one painting a poetic vision of glow-in-the-dark terrariums with real-life butterflies flitting about (before being released after the show). More welcome surprises came in the form of Givenchy’s elegant propositions of evening dresses and Rick Owens’s rather romantic—and beautiful—swerve. Alas, the runway was not the only stage that drew massive attention.
In an age where fashion houses rely much on celebrity marketing, the front row has pretty much become equivalent to the sort of clientele a brand might want to attract. So alongside every show, comes the impeccable whittling down of a select guest list—each one looking to be more star-studded than its previous. At Alexander McQueen, no doubt longtime friends of the house showed up for Burton’s finale, from Cate Blanchett and Elle Fanning to Letitia Wright. As for the show that was teeming with the most A-listers? It was quite possibly Louis Vuitton, where the likes of Saoirse Ronan, Jennifer Connelly, Gemma Chan and house ambassadors Zendaya, Felix of Stray Kids and Hyein from NewJeans all showed up for Nicolas Ghesquière spring/summer 2024 showing.
