With the end of the sartorial season approaching, Paris fashion week got off to a strong start. Maria Grazia Chiuri dedicated yet another collection to the power of women, while French luxury house Balmain rose from the ashes of its carjacked fiasco as creative director Olivier Rousteing illustrated his take on French luxury. Tailored, gold-buttoned blazers with sharp shoulders in sleek and striking hues echoed the house’s couture elements from the 1950s and 1990s. Roses were the running theme throughout the collection, cropping up as a top centrepiece, on patent leather coats, dresses and structured tops.
Meanwhile, Dries Van Noten showcased a runway that was “familiar-unfamiliar and unfamiliar-familiar”, as expressed by the Belgian designer. His proclivity to flip the script is prevalent in his collection as traditional menswear and lawn sportswear were treated by feminine elements. Shirt stripes and khaki cargos were transformed into bralettes and wrap skirts accompanied by schoolboy blazers and coats. This women’s collection was a companion to the men’s in June, as Van Noten resolved to redefine masculinity.
The rousing spirits of fashion week are translated off the runway as well, as attendees and enthusiasts alike storm the streets of the City of Light. Think sleek and sophisticated separates with a twist, with collared shirts and structured blazers remaining a staple, be it as an anchor piece or a base for layering. Form and texture were explored with in the form of ruffles, gathers and fringe, with polka dots galore amongst a frenetic sea of prints taking the streets by storm.
