While the ready-to-wear selection from the fall/winter 2022 runways has rightfully garnered attention, the season’s accessories—bags, to be exact—have put up a fair fight. From Brandon Maxwell’s black miniaudières to Carolina Herrera’s striking colourblocked mini totes, the New York city design set is proving that teeny tiny bags are still the most in-demand fashion accessory both on and off the runways. While sculptural versions were seen on the arms of the models at Gabriela Hearst and 3.1 Phillip Lim, Coach presented boxy bags with clean lines—a silhouette approved by the street style circuit.
Oversized carriers made their bold comeback this season, too. Tory Burch, who brought Gossip Girl-esque prep back into play with coloured tights and sweater vests, made the messenger bag cool again with a contemporary two-toned iteration. Other labels such as Proenza Schouler and Altuzarra debuted slouchy, boho-style carry-alls complete with dangling tassels and silver buckles reminiscent of designs from the noughties. Another indication of turn-of-the-millenium flair? Metallic bags which were given a 2022 revamp with neutral-toned leather, as seen at Peter Do.
At Milan Fashion Week, the Italian houses—in the vein of Prada, Fendi, and Tod’s—kept boxy structures in the form of unconventional shapes. Gucci brought on the spikes; Jil Sander opted to go soft on leather oversized clutches; and new Bottega (in Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection) soared in familiar woven minis.
Finally, in Paris—the hottest shows from the Hermès to Chanel took the city by storm, revealing this season’s essential accessories.
Here, Vogue Singapore chronicles the latest emerging It bags that we’ve spotted at the fall/winter 2022 shows so far.
