Show: Balenciaga fall/winter 2025
Designer: Demna
Location: Cour du Dôme des Invalides
The vibe: Is the world our runway… yet again? If so, we’re all for it. For Balenciaga’s fall/winter 2025 collection, Demna delivered a sociological commentary of sorts, blurring the lines between fashion and everyday life. The fun of the collection lay in all the guessing. First, showgoers were told that the entire show was front row with free seating, adding an element of unpredictability (and clear panic for some). People were seated amongst black curtains that created a maze. Then came the models—a true stamp of inclusivity, Balenciaga style: muscled men, mature models, and demeanours that felt as if they could be on their way to do just about anything—meet a friend, play some hoops, win medals, let loose on the dancefloor, or cry about their feelings.
The vision: Demna’s vision for this collection, as he has underscored time and again, is to subvert expectations. He notes that fashion can be a tool for comparison and replication but also a rigid ruler of “standards.” He subverts this with a focus on the seemingly mundane and ordinary. The collection began with what looked like office suits with a Balenciaga twist—sharp, but accented with blues and greys one might associate with bright white office lights. There were injections of what appeared to be Polo T-shirts (paired with helmets, of course), oversized hoodie-dresses (so oversized they draped on the floor), muscled men in muscle tees, and gowns that looked like elongated bathing suits—nothing short of chic.
What to shop: Balenciaga’s collaboration with Puma lent a particularly modern and blurred feel, particularly with tracksuits that offer just the right amount of humour for Demna stans to love (and shop). The brand’s Alpinestar gloves were a true-to-form technical element, especially in the SMX-2 and Morph Gloves, as well as the SuperTech R10 helmet. All the cornerstones of a Balenciaga production were present—gloved boots, long trained dresses in unconventional materials, and statement accessories, from all-encompassing eyewear to larger-than-life bags. This was a fun, feel-good collection—a mirror to society in a way only Demna could pull off.
