Chances are, you’ve seen Area in some shape or form on your Instagram feed. The American fashion house has garnered a cult-like following since its inception in 2014 after all, where its pieces are regularly sported by prominent names such as Kylie Jenner and Ariana Grande. The brainchild of Parsons School of Design alums, Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Pansczczyk, Area has always prided itself on pieces that reflect the playfully decadent spirit and razor-sharp wit of the institution it shares its name with. That is, the revered ‘80s Manhattan nightclub known for its slew of alternative shows that melds art with performance.
It’s clear to see that their spring 2022 presentation retains the core of its identity while amalgamating new twists. Familiar silhouettes and stylistic elements were given a new lease of life; the brand’s love of crystal-embellished fits haven’t waned, but is rather, revamped with the inclusion of spiked jewels and zippers. Cropped blazer iterations now come in a nipped-in, hourglass shape, remade to be a party-girl essential thanks to its lively take on the classic houndstooth available in shades of neon pink, turquoise and more.
Beyond renewed interpretations of fan-favourite pieces, Area’s spring 2022 showcase also featured butterfly motifs prominently; an homage to the Y2K era elevated with leather detailing, multi-coloured diamantes and fringe.
In short: Area’s spring collection proves to be a feather in the brand’s cap; an intriguing addition to their maximalist portfolio. Whether the inclusion of butterflies hints at an all-new transformation for their next range remains to be seen.
