Often, when a stylish city is to be named, this particular land of the East comes up in spades. Such is the appeal of Japan, where some of fashion’s greatest designers have emerged from over the decades. There’s Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, as well as namesake designers Yohji Yamamoto and the late Issey Miyake. In recent years, one might think of the woman behind Sacai, Chitose Abe. Naturally, the sartorial scene in Japan pulls its weight in the luxury world alone, and one can only imagine what the fabric of its city folk might look like. To get the best glimpse of this? Look to Tokyo Fashion Week, of course.
Although the big bulk of the fall/winter 2025 season had just completed its schedule in the big four cities, it seems we didn’t have to wait very long before another calendar roster joined its ranks. Over the past few days, the Rakuten Fashion Week in Tokyo has been playing out—where the city’s most style-inclined have come out in droves to check out the latest propositions by the city’s rising industry players. Take this year’s LVMH Prize semi-finalist Ryota Murakami’s, for example, whose eclectic knitwear brand Pillings shines a unique spotlight on the skilled hand knitters of Japan. Meanwhile, the last few shows of the week will see an unveiling of Chika Kisada’s punk approach to a dance form that is beloved to her, whilst her background in ballet can be said to inspire how she designs: attuned to the way a woman moves.
In a similar vein, the enthusiastic showgoers out on Tokyo’s streets reflect varying wardrobe passions too. By way of layering up, plenty of washed leathers and lightweight trenches were a notable sign that the coldest days of the city are over. Contrast is the name of the game; streetwear elements were often balanced out by frothy skirts or dresses to deliver a touch of edge. As for the overall palette? A love for a severe stroke of black (and not without exquisite texture thrown into the mix) is beloved by the city, yet one will find that the occasional maximalist—with their kawaii charms and statement accessories—will always be around to put a smile on everyone’s faces.
