Across the globe, Seoul Fashion Week takes its turn on the runway, bringing with it an immaculate schedule of 30 Korean designers set to present their spring/summer 2023 collections in the capital city. Fully returning to the intimacy of in-person shows, the mood that kicked off at the recognisable Dongdaemun Design Plaza was one of rebellious eclecticism—mixed in with modern reimaginings of heritage and tradition.
Scene stalwarts such as Songzio and Demoo Parkchoonmoo made their reliable return with impact; the former took their show outside and kicked off their show with rising street dance crew Hook just before veteran actor Cha Seung-Won stepped out onto the transformed runway. The necessity for socially conscious fashion still held its ground in the vein of sustainability leaders: from Im Seon Oc’s Parts Parts to Lee Seong Dong’s ul:kin. Not to forget French fashion label Ami, that welcomed a bevy of celebrities to Gwanghwamun Square in support of Alexandre Mattiussi’s first international show since the pandemic.
When it came to the fashion on the streets, local fashion enthusiasts and esteemed guests made their case known for a scene brimming with calm, confident energy. The climate has noticeably shifted; leather layers, decadent trenches and cosy sweaters have presented themselves as the necessary fabric of Seoul. The need for transitional practicality is one that unravels via dark-wash denim separates and dependable footwear. And as for the overarching palette? Muted black and browns were a consistent favourite amidst the occasional pop of colour delivered in an accessory or two.
Watch this space for more to come, as Su Shan Leong continues to lens the best of street style from Seoul Fashion Week.
