It goes without saying that London Fashion Week began with an unexpected turn of events. Just last week, several mainstays like Raf Simons and Burberry announced their shows’ change of plans to honour Queen Elizabeth II. Despite this, a spirit of optimism still prevails amongst the city’s fashion community to keep calm and carry on. As runway presentations come back in full force, this season’s schedule remains packed to brim with British favourites: JW Anderson, Simone Rocha, and Christopher Kane. New trailblazers are also making their mark in London’s fashion scene this week with collections by Chopova Lowena, Harris Reed and Charlotte Knowles.
And what of the denizens on the streets? A handful of showgoers toned down their manner of dress by opting for monochromatic ensembles that played with textures. On the flip side, other fashion enthusiasts brought out quintessentially British patterns like tartans and checks from their wardrobes. Clear, sunny skies also saw the appearance of sheer garments, ballet flats and voluminous, tiered baby doll dresses by way of Molly Goddard. Apart from the bold displays of colour, the street style maintained a balance of comfort and practicality; suiting was more relaxed with boxy blazers while leather jackets and belted trench coats were paired with sneakers and chunky platforms.
