From Songmont to Cafuné, these are the Chinese-owned bag brands that have been spotted everywhere

Fashion Week, or rather the whole succession of fashion month, has always been an opportune time for aspiration as well as an evaluation of fashion at its core. At its high, designers are lauded, celebrities are trending, attendees are inspired and so are well, the rest of the world watching on. Narrowing onto the stylish crew traipsing on the streets, it is also where we find the most adored labels and trends of the moment. Enter smashing styling combinations, oft flamboyant coats considering the colder seasons and It bags offering a pep in a step. The fall/winter 2023 season was no exception; where a pattern of Chinese-owned bag brands noticeably came into play amongst the street style set. An uncommon phenomenon, given that European brands typically rule the roost when one thinks of an It bag.

Songmont for instance, one of China’s biggest bag labels, recently skyrocketed in search and sales—spotted on the arms of fashion influencers, models and editors worldwide. What started out as the founder’s desire to create a day bag, has now led to many favoured silhouettes like its bestsellers, the Tofu satchel, the Wonton purse and well as the puffy Hugnny Bag Gift Box. The brand is also known for embracing inclusivity; despite its bags being well-loved by the younger folk, Songmont’s campaign last year featured its new ambassador—84-year-old actress Wu Yanzhu.

Also fending off ageism, is Chinese modern luxury brand Oleada, with model Maye Musk as its reigning ambassador. Based in Manhattan, the label features work-friendly bags that are functional, sturdy and versatile for any occasion, alongside other evening accessories seen on the likes of style mavens in the Big Apple.

Now stocked in multiple retailers like Bloomingdale’s and Farfetch, is Hong Kong bag brand Cafuné—another Fashion Week favourite. Its shapes range from playful prints to structured top-handles, with the latter being its bestselling Stance bag.
