Hot off the heels of the Big Four fall/winter 2025 shows in the West and the ever-inspiring Rakuten Fashion Week in Tokyo, we’ve finally landed in the Pearl of the Orient, Shanghai. Unanimously recognised as the fashion capital of China and a fast-rising international fashion hub, Shanghai played host to some of the most dynamic, experimental designers in the region, from established names like Mark Gong to promising talents like Ya Yi, as they showcased their latest collections.
As with previous seasons, the runway at Shanghai fashion week subverted the exclusive, luxurious feel of fashion capitals in the West. Where contemporary and inventive styles came into the fore—a result of the sheer domination of young millennial and Gen Z designers in China’s fashion scene—and often marked with the indelible fingerprints of Chinese tradition and craftsmanship, whether through design or artisanal techniques, as seen in labels like AO Yes and Samuel Guì Yang.
Highlights of the week included a darker, mature transformation from the rebellious Mark Gong, as well as Xander Zhou’s futuristic military-inspired collection. Shanghai fall/winter fashion week 2025 was capped off by none other than the internationally beloved Shushu/Tong, which showcased a series of impeccably tailored ensembles, from dainty pinafores, pleated skirts and collared dresses. Earthy tones and floral pastels were abundant, exuding an air of unpretentious, effortless femininity.
Clean, precise silhouettes also found their way onto the streets, with many showgoers layering up in an array of light, yet beautifully constructed coats as the city steps into springtime. Monochromatic ensembles also reigned supreme, extending to the chosen styles of couples and friends who opted to coordinate their show outfits. Although the colour palette—which was overwhelming black, white and blue—remained rather conservative, the most daring of the crowd injected personality into their ensembles with bold cut-outs, sheer panels and the occasional unconventional accessory, from vibrant gloves and patterned leg warmers to colourful faux furs.
Below, see the best street style from Shanghai Fashion Week this fall/winter 2025 season, as lensed by Yumeng Zheng.
