After weeks of warming up with men’s and haute couture presentations over in Europe, it’s time for the main course of the fashion circuit. The 2025 fall/winter season officially begins with New York Fashion Week. Despite the biting winter chill, the streets of New York City are abuzz with excitement for this season’s shows, with the likes of Thom Browne, Michael Kors and Coach due to present their collections over the next few days.
Fashion enthusiasts can anticipate the return of Calvin Klein, marking its new creative director Veronica Leoni’s maiden collection. This fashion week also coincides with the 2025 Superbowl, set to take place on Monday with Kendrick Lamar headlining this year’s halftime show. Whilst not technically a fashion-led event, Lamar has teamed up with fashion designer Willy Chavaria for a limited collection commemorating the show—cementing his place as one of fashion’s favourite rappers—and one can’t help but look forward to seeing who he’ll be wearing on the big stage this coming Tuesday.
Unofficially, New York Fashion Week got an early start with Marc Jacobs’s ‘Courage’ presentation at the New York Public Library, where a slate of vibrantly coloured ballgowns with exaggerated puffy skirts, bubble-like coats and whimsical footwear waltzed down the runway. Meanwhile, sustainable fashion brand Collina Strada turned heads on Thursday with similar balloon-ish silhouettes, albeit in more casual, hooded styles, alongside a stunning showcase of ruffled gowns constructed from repurposed wedding and first communion dresses.
Looking to the rain-soaked streets of New York, it seems this year’s showgoers are embracing the call of the wild, with animal prints and fur-lined hats reigning supreme. With temperatures hitting the negatives, it’s no surprise that attendees are relying heavily on layers to stay warm and in style. Think opulent fur coats over denims and wools, and prints on prints splashed out in colour. Others appear to favour the trim, sharp aesthetic of immaculately structured coats, wearing them atop anything from tailored suits to silky slips.
