For anyone who requires more evidence that ‘fashion month’ is really ‘fashion season’—look to the bustling crowds, unending shows and events, and eclectic styles overrunning the streets of China’s fashion capital as the month of March nears its end. A testament to its buzzy fashion scene, the fall/winter 2024 Shanghai Fashion Week was preceded by the openings of Loewe’s novel exhibition celebrating the house’s history and Supreme’s first flagship store in the city mere days before the eight-day showcase.
Proving the fall/winter 2024 season is still far from drawing to a close, Le Fame opened the week at the Jean Nouvel-designed Xintiandi Red Hall with a characteristically romantic reimagination of the modern Shanghai woman through the vintage and classically Shanghainese fabrics of velvet, Chinese satin, and herringbone tweed. The show’s homage to classic Chinese elegance and femininity is set to juxtapose with the dim-sum inspired collection of Mithworld, sister line to London Fashion Week’s Mithridate, slated to close Shanghai Fashion Week. Emerging designers such as LVMH finalist Louis Shengtao Chen are expected to make a splash, as is the newly-relaunched The Next graduates show, featuring designs from China’s most promising fashion graduates.
In addition to the abundance of homegrown talent, the eight-day event also has several international surprises in place—M SPACE put environmentalism at the forefront with its opening panel of global industry leaders on sustainability on Monday, Australian label Dion Lee to show its fall collection off-schedule, and Mytheresa will unveil a two-part collaboration with Courrèges consisting of a limited-edition capsule collection and an immersive exhibition at Fotografiska.
Outside of the shows, Shanghai’s fashion enthusiasts demonstrate thorough understandings and reintepretations of runway highlights, as they bring the trends of netted garments, sensual silhouettes and clashing fabrics onto the city’s busy boulevards.
