As September reins in fashion weeks across the globe, rising fashion capitals outside of the “Big Four” have stepped up, one of them being Seoul. The spring/summer 2024 presentation coincides with renowned Frieze Art Fair 2023, alongside resident cultural events such as art fair Kiaf SEOUL, public art initiative Seoul Light and trade event Seoul Beauty Week.
Ul:kin spearheaded the season with an ominous perspective on designer LSD’s, and every Korean male’s, rite of passage. A retrospection of the designer’s service in military, the collection saw a focus on deconstruction and upcycled fabrics inspired by the outdoors encapsulated in signature military shades. Established Seokwoon Yoon also took to reminiscing on national culture, however in the direction of traditional rituals. A myriad of ribbons, geometric patterns and overlaid textile developments inspired by shamanic tools and practices encapsulated Yoon’s collection. This season also sees up-and-coming designers breaking into the scene with the likes of #whysocerealz and its unconventional art performance and Maison Nica, who borrows heavy inspiration from the Ancient Greek tale of Dionysus.
Considering a week teeming with events across art, fashion and beauty, it’s no surprise that aficionados alike have taken to Dongdaemun Design Plaza, where Seoul Fashion Week is held, as their personal runway. Preppy influences and denim-on-denim set the stage with the occasional pop of colour. A myriad of rebellious black ensembles were spotted, with layering as the accessory of choice, with overlapping panels of pattern and texture for added dimensions. A pair of black shades, too fell to be the accent of the season.
