Few would describe a fine jewellery collection as essential, but in the Saint Laurent universe, no other description could be more apt when the house’s iconic Cassandre and Maillon motifs are sculpted in 18k solid gold.
For its inaugural Haute Joaillerie collection, the fashion brand has taken a foray into new territory while staying rooted in the familiar. The beloved Cassandre motif, featuring the YSL logo, and the easily recognisable Maillon, or chain, have been reimagined as design elements in precious wearable art.
Declaring the range of rings, cuffs, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces as functional, collectable—and essential—creative director Anthony Vaccarello has brought to life his vision for a fine jewellery collection that is novel, yet has a timeless appeal that is meant to transcend trends.
The collection’s campaign images, shot by renowned German photographer Juergen Teller, is a testament to its versatility. Stack multiple cuffs in the Thick and Thin sizes on both arms to create a powerful look reminiscent of Wonder Woman’s Bracelets of Submission. Don’t hesitate to mix white and yellow gold as it only adds dimension to the look.
For a less heavy ensemble, break up a stack of cuffs with delicate Cassandre Bangles. The slim, graphic profile of the YSL logo alternated with the wide sections of polished gold of the Thick and Thin Cuffs creates an interesting visual rhythm.
The same effect can be created on the fingers: stack the open Claw Rings with polished Twist Rings, a chunky Graduated Chain Ring featuring the Maillon motif, and delicate Cassandre Chain Rings. The last also comes in a diamond-set version for extra shine.
The theme of contrast continues throughout the collection. The Pyramid Earrings are an oversized statement while the Cassandre Long Threader Single Earring, an everyday classic. The Graduated Chain Necklace was designed for visual impact, but the dainty Heart and Star Pendant Necklaces, to add a subtle finishing touch to outfits. Given its heft, the Oversized Graduated Chain Bracelet simply demands to be worn over shirt cuffs—as the model does in a campaign image—but the Multi-Chain Bracelets easily slip under one.
