From the diamond earring to the pearl necklace, Sophie Bille Brahe loves giving classic jewels a fresh twist. The latest essential to come under the Danish jeweller’s creative gaze is the ubiquitous initial necklace, as beloved by everyone from Emily in Paris’s titular heroine to Meghan Markle and Hailey Bieber.

In fact, Brahe’s latest collection, Lettre de Lumière, started out not with a pendant but with a ring. “I often get special requests for signet rings but they’re just not my style. When I designed an ‘S’ for myself it was like my version of a signet,” she says. Basing each letter on her own handwriting, with the addition of diamonds in her signature graduated, bezel-set style, it wasn’t long before she was wearing SBB across one hand and her children’s initials on the other, like precious tattoos. “They make me feel complete. I left them at home the other day when I went to Paris and I felt so naked without them!” she laughs.
Bille Brahe believes we’ve all fallen for initial jewellery because it taps into our emotions and is an instant talking point—whether you wear your own initials or those of a loved one. “After all, jewellery is about emotional investment rather than about stuff,” she says. And with this collection, she’s made something for everyone, no matter your style. Available exclusively at Browns and sophiebillebrahe.com, it includes initial necklaces, stud earrings—even a heart ring for the teenager in all of us who once scribbled their crush’s initials across every conceivable surface.
