Ever since Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada decided to join forces as co-creative directors, Prada has been lavishing in a constant state of futurism. In the Prada fall/winter 2022 show titled An Ideology of Prada, the continued vision to taper looks from past collections was flinted with an added sentiment: delving into the history of women. This draws a faint parallel to the fall/winter menswear show a month ago, which saw the house honouring eight actors that embodied “real men and recognised figures.”
Pre-show, teasers on the maison’s Instagram took followers on a walk down memory lane, following Prada’s models on an intimate snapshot of “growing up”. The theme of memory strikes a chord in the pieces from the collection; fitted on the industry’s current leading ladies—from Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer, It girls Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber to familiar faces like Erin O’Connor and Elise Crombez who walked the Prada runways decades ago. Modelled on Gerber who opened the show, a fitted tank top sporting the maison’s triangular logo was fronted with a metallic mesh skirt—a simple yet unforgettable premise that solidified this season’s look. From there, varying separates were layered over: retro printed wool sweaters; padded bombers embellished with glittering appliqués; tailored blazers emblazoned with heavy chains binded at the neck, while feathers stroked at the arm on a few.
Loud sirens of colour were introduced carefully—a cause for an effervescent night out, that brought us back to the show notes: “a commemoration of life and living—of the occasion of everyday affording importance to each moment.” The collection conveyed strength (more so than the properiety) of the Prada woman today, but not without past reflections. Simons and Prada collectively made sure to honour that.
