It’s always a huge undertaking to predict what a new season from Loewe would entail—particularly the upcoming Loewe fall/winter 2022 menswear show. Under the reign of creative director Jonathan Anderson, the collections—be it seasonal or limited-edition, have been nothing short of whimsical, fresh and undeniably joyful. The most recent Loewe x Spirited Away capsule, which saw the continued collaboration with Studio Ghibli, will tell you this much. But that’s exactly what’s so intriguing about the Spanish fashion house.
What we are certain is this: Anderson’s firm dictation in genderless fashion and freeing use of colour—especially detailed in Loewe’s spring/summer 2022 menswear collection. There was a myriad of bold shades and the emphasis on experimentation, to transport the viewers to a fantasy world carved out by Anderson himself. He’s never one to play it safe or conform to the trends of the world—while advocating on having fun when designing a collection. To quote the designer himself, he enjoys making “clothing that still, today, is like seeing a crocodile on a street.”
Often, his collections tend to be deeply personal—mirroring his state of mind and self-reflections. Mired in insecurities of youth and self-expression: there’s conflict in identity, rebellion in the garment shapes and most importantly, a complete collection that tells an important story. Cult follower or not, you will find it a liberating experience to see it all unfold on the runway. Typically, his vision also encapsulates the current times, which is probably the reason why he remains to be a designer of relevance and originality.
We can’t exactly forsee what’s to come, but going from the show’s main holding image, our money’s on psychedelic pops of colour. After all, the fun part often lies in the element of surprise, especially with Anderson at helm.
Tune in tonight at 7:30pm (SGT) to watch the Loewe fall/winter 2022 menswear show here.
