In fashion, small leather goods and accessories have always been a longtime staple, and for good reason. Often, their casual yet chic nature—coupled with a year-round versatility—make for sought-after items that can be incorporated into any wardrobe. Through the years, we have seen a momentary craze for micro-pouches, lanyards and even wallet chains (the latter fuelled by the rise of streetwear several years back). And as the world officially enters a new post-pandemic norm, the idea of dressing up and showing out has once again taken over the style zeitgeist. The latest accessory making its mark? Keyrings.
Both on and off the runway, there has certainly been a surge in sightings of this kitschy and playful accessory. The spring/summer 2024 season served as a catalyst for this, with many of the biggest luxury houses sending their bags down the runway adorned with bold charms and oversized trinkets. Balenciaga and Miu Miu showed a myraid of chains, keys and tags in an array of colours and textures, while Moschino took on a more subdued approach by incorporating monochromatic embellishments that appeared to be a part of the bag. Then there were brands such as Louis Vuitton who looked to reintroduce the keyring in a more conventional manner, by having it on the belt loops of many of the models walking the show.
On the streets, it seems the notion of over-accessorising one’s bags has trickled down to the masses. With many show attendees adorning their own bags with all sorts of trinkets both big and small. After all, it is an easy way to give your seasoned bag a fresh new look and an unbridled outlet for creativity and expression. Perhaps the most notable style reference—and a muse whose style many try to emulate—would be the peerless Jane Birkin. The former actress, singer and sartorial icon was never one to shy away from overstuffing and beating up her eponymous Hermés Birkin bag, often personalising her bags with beads, pendants and threads reflective of her unapologetic style and demeanour.
