The jorts: fashion’s most famous portmanteau. Despite being dismissed as yet another nostalgia-inducing trend, jorts have slowly (but surely) found their place in the tous les jours. Not to be confused with bermuda shorts, its tailored, trouser-like cousin, the modern entry to jorts are easily identifiable: über baggy and dangerously low-rise. Cut in the most slouchy of silhouettes, it’s not hard to see why the zeitgeist adores the denim short, be it a casual Parisian’s spin on the look or an aesthetic you’ll spot plenty of in the skate park.
Jorts may be in rotation for every summer, but there’s no reason to dismiss them as a chic transitional piece. After roaming the cobblestone streets of Spello on your Euro summer trip, an overcoat or jacket for the night’s chill wouldn’t make them look anywhere out of place. For spring/summer 2026, Balenciaga paired the jort with a supersized leather jacket, burgundy flip-flops and a chocolate-brown leather bag to match. Later on, the bottoms were matched with a statement green jacket, voluminous in shape and textured in green florals. Margiela, on the other hand, made a semi-formal statement, styling their jorts with a classic black blazer, and a shiny vest peeking out from underneath the lapels. As the model’s cowboy boots brushed the frayed hemlines of his denim, the maison showed us exactly how to hold onto our jorts a little longer—with the help of our outerwear.
A cornerstone of ’90s hiphop culture, the oversized, knee-brushing short was once adopted by icons such as Aaliyah and Madonna. Streetwear’s uniform had become ultra-loose, swallowing the wearer almost entirely.
The early 2020s saw the comeback of wide inseam denim, with the languid, laid-back garment being photographed on the streets more than ever. Made viral primarily by models Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, they kept the waistlines low with cropped tees—acing the ultimate off-duty model aesthetic. Artists such as Justin Bieber and Tyler the Creator have also included it in their rotating repository of signature looks. Even the wash of your denim helps to set the tone. A lighter wash feels reminiscent of a sun-drenched afternoon—trailing through the streets of Portofino or Valencia perhaps—whilst some darker denim might almost give your look a smarter twist.
