No doubt about it: India’s rich textile heritage is an intrinsic and undeniable part of the global fashion industry. Indian artisans, craftsmanship, and textiles have long been the backbone of major luxury houses for decades. From handwoven silks to fine cotton, these textiles are more than just mere pieces of cloth; they carry deep history and cultural significance. After all, the looms in India have been at work for over 5000 years, echoing centuries-old traditions passed down through generations. While Khadi, Banarasi, and Ikat dominate the limelight, a certain well-known fabric has entered the chat, again. Which one, you ask? Pashmina. As most recently seen on our favourite It girl, Kendall Jenner.

Once reserved for royalty, this regal textile originates from the frame looms of Ladakh and Kashmir, where Changthangi goats produce an exceptionally fine undercoat, locally known as pashm, during the cold winter months. This fibre is then meticulously combed by hand, spun into thread, and woven by adept weavers using traditional looms. The result is a fabric that is impossibly soft, feather-light, and remarkably warm. A lot of the prestige around these shawls stems from their rarity, with limited production and a weaving process that can take months, maybe even years. This scarcity, combined with artisanal craftsmanship, is what makes the shawl so precious.
