Black, as inane as it may sound, well and truly is back. We’ve seen it on the runways and the streets: between TikTok-driven trends like dark academia and straight up goth, designer collections like Rick Owens‘s funereal glamour and Valentino’s studded punks, there’s something in the air where a dark sensibility is concerned.
Lots of it may perhaps be attributed to the runaway success of Wednesday, the Netflix adaptation of The Addams Family that launched Jenna Ortega, the series’ lead actress in the titular role, to stardom. When the show made its debut in November last year, it proved a font of style and beauty inspiration. Think goth girl dressing (Victorian dress styles, all-black knits, glossy black over-the-knee boots) and makeup looks that prioritise eyeliner (duh) and deep, burgundy lips.
The cultural timing was serendipitous too. All this gothic pop culture was percolating as designers got to work on their fall/winter 2023 collections. And, though the Wednesday debut just narrowly missed Halloween in 2022, the chance has come around this year. Bets are on that Halloween parties this year are going to be a deluge of Barbie and Ken getups. Expect lots of pink, blue and neon yellow costumes at the parties. But if your sense of style is of a darker persuasion—spooky, gothic, and perhaps a little Romantic—there’s still lots of fun to be had in the dress up games.
